Re: Why snipe at all? Posted by Larry West [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Why snipe at all?, TML ![]() ![]() |
Actually, I understood you perfectly. I'm not sure you're understanding me.
If I decide that I'll pay $50 for an item, I don't see how it matters when I place that bid. eBay will ONLY apply enough of my bid to best the previous top bid by the bid increment active at that time.
Let's say an item has an initial bid amount of $1. I see it, mull it over, and decide I'll pay $50 for it.
I could wait until the end of the auction to bid, but it is possible I could get blocked by excessive sniping activity in the closing seconds, and my bid never gets registered, and someone gets it for less than I was willing to bid (of course, there is the equal possibility of the bidding going over my amount regardless of whether it gets in or not...).
On the other hand, if I place my max bid early, I don't have to worry about the bid getting registered, I just have to worry about someone outbidding me! eBay will automatically increase my bid by the minimum increment until the bid would exceed my maximum bid. Also, if my max bid gets exceeded early in the course of an auction, I have a chance to regroup and reconsider a higher bid.
If I bid $50 early on an auction, and the other bid action (including last minute sniping) goes no higher than $24, I pay $25. Period. I don't pay $50, so I can't really "overpay".
Overpaying is relative. I may be willing to go $100 on an item that you'll only go to $75 for. And vice-versa. And that's regardless of other indicators of the item's value.
If people want to use sniping tactics, I've no trouble with it. When they beat me, they've beaten me fair and square, according to the rules of the game (i.e. they outbid me). And when I win, I've won fair and square, using the same rules. I just don't see a huge benefit.
And I know there are lots of folks out there whose only "thing" is to win every auction they bid. That's fine too. But it is THOSE people who end up overpaying for an item, once the "red mist" rises...
