"I think that only really works if you're willing to pay significantly more than the item is worth (ie average price in ended auctions) or if the auction is not very competitive"
What is your definition of "works" in this context? To me, my strategy "works" whether I win or lose the auction. If I win, I have paid an amount I am comfortable with, whether that amount is my max or any amount less than my max. If I lose, then the price went over and above what I was willing to pay (and I didn't have to sweat those last minute bids at 4 AM!).
Simple, no?
To some folks, a bidding strategy "works" only if they always win the auction. I bid on auctions to obtain things at what I consider a reasonable price. That figure may be more than some are willing to pay for that same item, but I'm equally sure that is is often less than others are willing to pay.
It seems to me that my strategy is being interpreted as that I bid an artificially high number. That is never the case. I bid only what I am willing to pay, nothing more. If I pay "more" for something, that is only because ebay proxy bid for me one more increment than another bidder, up to my maximum bid.
I've also, over the years, won auctions at a very low price, even though my max was very much higher. It all depends on the competition.
And don't forget, in the event of a tie bid, on ebay, the auction goes to the EARLIER bid for that amount. So if I bid $50 on day 1, and you bid $50 in the last second, I get the item...
Using this strategy, I've had many successful auctions where I won the item, and I've also failed to win many auctions. That's the name of the auction game!
