Do oil filters rust on the inside at all? Posted by bender [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I purchased 12 oil filters from ebay. Great deal, had they been new new. They *were* new, but half or more had some rust on the top. See picture. Now...the ones that do not have rust like this one DO have rust, or slight rust on the OUTSIDE of the gasket. Obviously new ones do not have rust there, but it shouldn't matter since that part is outside the gasket and oil never gets there anyway. So, this renders the filter as usable, correct? Then my only concern is, could there be any crap inside it? i.e. can they rust inside as well? I suppose the easiest thing to do, is to just not use them and not take the risk. It's quite silly to take a risk on an engine because of an oil filter.
I just wanted the original blue ones, and got unlucky on ebay. Learn from my lesson. What do you think, should I use it or not? BTW I am showing you a pic of one that I WOULDN'T use. The other ones haver no rust, or VERY slight rust (VERY SLIGHT!)....and so my concern is, if it looks good on the outside, is it also good on the inside?
Thanks, Bender.
