I thought that it is forced through the middle and back through the little holes. But, it now makes sense that it's the other way around, since the oil would not be able to go through the holes as there is a rubber piece. It must prevent backflow. In that case, it appears that I can use the filter.
But you know what? My gosh, I thought so much about this, and I realize I should just not use the ones that are "too" rusty, since I also need piece of mind. It's not worth risking. I do, however always place magnets in my filters anyway. I am sure I'd be fine, but still don't want to take the risk with my Viggen. Perhaps if I have a winter beater, I wouldn't mind.
Kind of hurts to throw them out, but I think it is for the best. I'll get them recycled.
