When I had my dealership we used to occassionally buy cars from a Volvo dealership in Chicago. They were always low mile cars for year, but they were "big city" cars that had spent their lives parked on the street and boy were they beat up cosmetically. We'd automatically figure on painting both bumpers and having the "dent doctor" work them over. They'd usually clean up pretty good, but you're right, miles isn't always the end all and be all. Theory is one thing, but when you're pounding the pavement looking for a decent used car as rare as a Saab you have to know when to grab the right car when it comes along. $5-7k doesn't buy a lot these days. I mean what could you buy for the same money? An indifferently maintained Accord with 100K on it with cloth seats and hub caps? You're going to walk over a lousy $2k? Your 4k will get you one with 120,000 miles alright but that $2K you save will disappear pretty fast over the next year or two. I used to see guys outsmart themselves all of the time and ace themselves out of a creampuff because they just couldn't get themselves to anti up the relatively trivial amount it took to close the deal. With cars like that (again assuming it's as nice as the miles would indicate)there's always someone who will step up to the pump and pay the price, and that includes me.
