Different results refinishing wheels Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: This explains the low cost of the rough wheels...., ZAAB ![]() |
A few years ago, my summer wheels/tires (9000 Super Aeros) were stolen out of my garage, probably for their value as scrap aluminum (~$1 per pound, 22 pounds each x 4). I bought another set at a junkyard and a couple of them needed some work. I filed down the lips, sanded, filled imperfections with glazing spot putty, and repainted with Krylon silver wheel paint. They look fine for use on my car, and since I redid two of them, I mount them on the same side and the color difference from the OEM finish is not visible. I did not use clear over the silver, as previous experience (on the "missing" wheels) showed me that the clear will develop cracks. It's not "show car perfect", but looks plenty good to me; after the smallest bit of brake dust accumulates, it's hard to see any difference. No, the paint is not as hard as OEM powder coat, and that's the $600 difference.
Based on these results, I bought a set of used Audi rims for snow tires on my other car, refinished them again with a spray can of Krylon and they are better than suitable for winter use. Note that I do have a some experience with spray cans from one of my summer jobs as a kid (furniture touch up), but it's not that hard to get it to come out well.
Maybe someone wants these for snows? If I had a 9-5, I'd be all over these for that purpose.
