It depends on the specific Dell computer. Four years ago Dell was using a mix of pseudo-ATX and pseudo-BTX form factors. The former you can generally work with, but the latter you generally cannot. With the system laying down flat, motherboard parallel to the ground, and the optical drive facing you, if the power supply is on the left it's BTX and on the right it's ATX.
A four year old system is likely either going to be based on a Socket 478 (Pentium 4) or Socket AM/AM2 (Athlon). You can probably buy a motherboard, case, and power supply for not all that much money, and then just move the processor, memory, and drives over. It'll probably be easier than making a motherboard work.
That said, buying motherboards for these old systems is not all that cheap. They have been out of general production for a long time. Even LGA 775 motherboards (Core) are out of production now, and prices are going back up with scarcity. It may be time to throw in the towel on this one and move on.
You may very well have better results buying a new computer
