I don't disagree that macs are pretty good for a large subset of users, particularly home users + in some specific professions... that said, susceptibility to viruses/malware is not really much of a reason to drop windoze (for Linux either)... if a significant enough % of the user base was mac, then the viruses would increase... it's more about supply + demand than a higher level of genius in the programming department at Apple. I've used PCs for decades now + have only had 2 viruses (over the course of using dozens of computers, always numerous simultaneously, and usually on 24-7), both of which were easily cleaned with no impact and virtually zero down time (ie an hour or less)...
In terms of hardware reliability, it's really hard to compare because a Mac's reliability looks pretty good against some of the junkier generic "clones" and many (imho mediocre) name brand PCs, but not any better than a machine built with carefully selected quality parts. The Mac ergonomics/aesthetics are generally nice though some have their downsides... fortunately macs are becoming more or less generic PCs, so the high repair costs when something does fail may be a thing of the past...
That said: I don't use IE (I use Firefox). I don't use Outlook (I use Thunderbird). Like Mac, neither of those are risk free, but better than their MS equivalents (again supply + demand), + I am careful what sites I visit, don't fall for phishing etc, + use decent, up to date, anti-virus, anti-spyware/malware, firewall, etc... most of this stuff is free (what to use depends on windoze version)... I used to use McAfee back when it was free + good + not bloated like today...
I will say though that imho Vista is poo + upgrading (to 7) or downgrading (to XP) is not unwise... though I have been too lazy to remove it from this machine...
For the casual user, keeping up with some of this stuff might be overwhelming... but I'm not convinced that being oblivious on a somewhat safer os is great either...
good luck!
James...
