I actually disagree - this does not sound like malware or a virus at all. What would a malware author have to gain by directing traffic from jeep.com to edmunds.com? Browser-type malware invariably directs a computer to spot where you need to buy something, or to a spot to complete/further the injection. Highly unlikely software with malicious intent would redirect to another legitimate website. Something else is going on here, and I'm going to wager it's either a component of McAfee ("we think you meant x, so you're going there) or some dumb browser plug in. Could also be something your ISP is doing - several ISPs have been known to "hijack" DNS or search engine queries to create ad revenue, etc.
If you are still using Windows XP you need to stop that, now. Like or dislike is less relevant than safe or not safe, and IMHO using Windows XP on the internet was dangerous three years ago, and it's not getting better. If you're on the internet and value your time/data/money, you need to be using Windows 7.
And, finally, don't buy the propaganda about Macs not having viruses. Apple would like you to believe that, and a lot of Mac users are living in a state of denial about it as well, but the fact of the matter is that Macs are subject to the same threats that PC users are. Exploits for OSX are demo'd routinely, and in fact two of the major virus kits in circulation now specifically support OSX. Apple is notoriously slow about acknowledging much less patching holes in their software, which makes some of these threats quite serious.
I am not supporting PCs or bashing Macs - one is not better than the other. They are simply different, just like Saab and Audi. You take your chances either way, you just need to know what chances you're taking and act accordingly. And don't run old software on either of them
