When I was a kid we always went off local knowledge of the ponds. Our fathers, grandfathers, and beyond that had skated on the same ponds literally for decades or more. Because of that, we knew where the springs / flowing water under the ice was. And, we'd also ask anyone who was on the ice that day.
We never skated alone unless we were on one particular pond we knew was only 3-ft deep. We'd also skip a rock across the ice if there was no snow on it and listen to the sound the ice made. Sounds wierd but it was just one more check in the process.
I went through the ice once chasing down a 50-cent puck. I didn't go under but it was only because the lightest of my friends was able to lay down on the ice and extend his stick out to me was I able to get out.
It's almost impossible to get out by yourself once you're in because you keep sloshing water on top of ice and wet ice is the most slippery substance imaginable. I always had a big screwdriver on me after that to dig into the ice to pull myself up if needed.
