It's tough to get rid of smoke but should be lessened at least as much as possible. A smoke hater will pick up on it right away no matter what you try.
It's a lot of things we don't know about the car and what they want to get out of it so it's not easy to advice.
Anything that is easy to do yourself and parts that are not that expensive is a good idea. Like wash and wax doesn't cost you much except elbow grease but a good detail job is $100.00 to 150.00 at least if you hire someone.
A major service with all the filters and fluids and such is at least $500.00 to 600.00 if you have to pay someone.
So if they only want to get $1000.00 or around for it it is no use to spend too much fixing it up.
