17" steel wheels

I've got a cracked alloy wheel (02-03 Aero 10 spoke) and I'm wondering if there are 17" steel wheels out there that might fit my 9-5. NY area roads are tough on wheels. There are 16" options, but not many 17" ones. The 5x110 17" steels might not have the right offset and seem to cost nearly as much as alloys. I wonder why no one specializes in quality, light steel wheels. They could have beefy rims so as not to bend from potholes. Perhaps too many have been persuaded that alloys are always better.
Is it worth waiting and going to the Saab Owner's Convention in the hope of getting a wheel or an entire set at bargain prices? What do wheels tend to sell for at a SOC?
