I run old nicked and curb-rashed allows for winter. Been doing this on all the family's Saabs for 10+ years.
16" rims are fine on an Aero and readily available used--they were standard on all 9-5s except for the Aero. You might pay $40-75 for one, but steelies are not much less. Get 'em from a boneyard that'll let you return any that aren't straight, or that can spin them before you buy to make sure they're straight.
With a 16" you get a slightly higher sidewall which protects the rim a bit.
