our indy warned me that it is fairly common for some of the 17" rims to incur damage on the inner side of the rim. We have pretty awful roads here also (frost destroys roads)... so far, no problems I've noticed on our car, but time will tell!
My 16" setup is the same diameter as 17" but 205 width vs 225. The winter setup is not as responsive as summer, but not as much as I would have expected considering the very different tires (Nokian HakkaR vs Michelin PSS). There is much more difference going to the narrow winter tires on the c900 (185/65R15)! I think I paid $200 for a set of used 16" rims. If you are patient they sometimes come up for less. If you want to keep it stock, probably the best bet is to search up the appropriate alloy for that year. I don't think they are too rare. There is a nation-wide junk yard inventory website - I think the link below is the right one.
