I posted recently on what to do when leaving a job.
There's more to this story, so I hope some of you may impart your knowledge and life experience. Now you know why I haven't been so active in the Saab world :-).
Long story short: worked at a company for a summer, manager liked my work extended me an offer. Joined a few months later, from Canada, but when I did my manager left his role. New manager came in, did not have great chemistry with him and felt I should leave. Gave it a go and this progressed and I got by alright for a year. Had a couple of things go sour after the new year, right before my performance evaluations. Gave me a not-so-great one and already felt was creating a paper trail against me. Couple of weeks later, surprised me with a performance improvement plan. It all came very fast.
I felt this was a sham and wanted to resign. Started looking for other work, but this takes time to do right. So I gave the plan a try, gave it my best despite it being vague. I tried to make it more concrete but faced hostility. He even went away on vacation for a week...I knew this was somewhat of a wasted effort.
No matter what I did, there was always something. So, I expressed my concern to an upper manager who was more genuine with me. Said he'd see what he can do. After this, I then had another meeting and they gave me two options: two week performance plan extension or a package (5 weeks and health benefits for two months). Obviously the former isn't wise given the circumstances.
I want to resign and have it my way and say that I left. If I accept the package, it's a resignation with a benefit, but I'm unsure if I technically resigned. Would I be able to say that to the next employer? Is it worth resigning and foregoing the package?
What should I do? I spoke to some lawyers and one told me I should take the package but try to negotiate getting it in pay stubs until a month from now so I can remain employed and look for other work. How can I maximize my payoff, mainly taking into account future prospects over short term monetary payout?
I wasn't happy to begin with and I'm sure there'll be some better more fitting job with a much better manager. It's just life. So I'm looking forward to the change, but not how fast it's coming. I hate the fact that we have to be so afraid of being unemployed like it's the most terrible thing (I dont have dependants (other than my saab :-). In fact, wouldn't even mind taking some time off to reflect, but that would mean I'd have to leave the area back to Canada. It's fine but I don't feel I'm ready to.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts/experiences.
