In a way I wish I could have stayed and moved to another team, but given the circumstances that is not possible. I say I wish that because in a way, it would be the easier option. Finding new work right now is harder and requires more effort but I know deep inside that it's the best thing for me. Sometime we need some of that. So with that, I will be leaving and looking forward to it.
I'll request to get the severance and have it be clear that it is my resignation, whatever the heck that means. Apparently people do “back channel” reference checks. I will ask for them to keep me "employed" for another month and pay me the severance in pay stubs so I can at least say that I am employed. We’ll see if they agree. And if they don't...well, I'll deal with it one way or another.
I don't really know if working for these corporations is my thing. I'll give another one a go given the "hotness" in tech at the moment, but I have to say in some ways it is like being bullied by an abusive manager in a very passive way. If you don't love your job...it can feel like a form of modern day slavery! To hear some of you having had rough 6 months or more is hard to accept. This also has been a few months, but the last month has been tough. But only a month! I don't want to quit so easily just because of this bad experience, so I'm giving it another try.
As for Unemployment Insurance, it turns out I am eligible even as a Canadian. Never collected any in my life, so it feels strange, but if I can get the company not to contest it then I could get the severance and some UI. I guess it couldn't hurt me? Anyway, not what I’m after here. I’d get much more money from the severance.
None are really great choices so I think this is probably the best I can do at this point. Kind of want to take some time off to reflect but will give the job search another go and maybe if I do get another offer, I can negotiate a later start date. Might even consider a change in industry....still young.
Thanks for the positive feedback from some of your past experiences. Looking forward to moving on to better things. Thanks as always.
