A lot of good advice. For me, "bite the dust" occurs when costs greatly exceed the value. Being able to repair my vehicles gives me the flexibility to drive them longer than average. Some minor repairs aren't that difficult (brakes, oil changes, tune-ups jump to mind) and you could easily learn to do them. I've saved hundreds (if not thousands) with the help of this board. I recently repaired a CEL light on my 9-5. It wasn't hard, just tedious and required attention to detail. I'm sure that's something you could accomplish. Some auto parts stores give lifetime warranties on their parts. Imagine only paying for brake pads once over the life of a car. This can be a real money saver.
My only caveat to K W's comments are the necessity for a good mechanic, not necessarily one at a dealer. Dealerships (sometimes referred to as "stealerships" on this board) charge a premium that often exceeds the value where good independent mechanics (indies) are more inclined to provide better value and help you keep your car running longer.
