This is partly the dealer experience vs diy or indy... With a TB that new, most likely it just needed cleaning or some other minor thing. I've had TB codes before, and was able to fix them in my driveway with minimal effort. When a car is brand new (45k is brand new in my world), some techs will just swap the part because it is easy and pretty much guaranteed.
Early DIC's were problematic. I'm pretty sure all of those have bit the dust by now. The newer ones give warning... to say you could drive around with a spare DIC in the trunk is perhaps admitting to a reliability issue... but it is also possible to proactively maintain old cars such that they are reliable... most people don't do it, but it is possible.
I really like the larger 2.0L A4 avant, especially in Allroad format... but I do wonder about the maintainability of a car like that. Our SAABs are pretty easy to manage (newest car is a 2004 9-5, others are c900's)
