To a large extent, I agree that most performance tires offer way more performance than we need for normal roads. That said, they do often offer a better road feel, and some are much better in the wet (high performance in the wet is my main criterion for summer tires). The downsides of course are shorter tire life, sometimes noise, fuel economy, and cost.
I would say running a super high performance tire like Michelin Pilot Super Sports (btdt) is over the top. They are wonderful to drive, but wear very quickly. Going to something slightly more moderate but still performance oriented (eg Bridgestone RE970AS or General AS03) has worked fine for me.
I know those Goodyears were well liked and probably in roughly the same category as the RE970 or General AS03, but they are asymmetrics rather than directionals... I like directional for water, but it really does vary tire to tire... I was considering the goodyears as an option back when I was looking, so that likely means they rated pretty highly for wet performance...
