I find it humorous that both the US and now the EU are making a big deal about slapping tariffs on Chinese cars to protect domestic auto jobs. One could make the argument that Chinese electric cars might be a lower cost alternative for consumers who can’t afford the pricier domestic models and challenge domestic manufacturers to get electric cars out more quickly. Of course, the 100% tariff on Chinese electric cars won’t cost the Chinese manufacturers one cent aside from market share, but could cost US consumers more by limiting competition. I’m old enough to remember how the Japanese imports stimulated the US manufacturers to make better cars, especially small cars. But the larger issue to me, and probably many here on SaabNet, is how the US government makes no effort to stem the flood of often substandard or even unsafe parts from China. There seems to be no requirement to even label parts with the country of origin so it’s often impossible to identify Chinese parts. And there seems to be no enforcement of laws against counterfeit parts using legitimate manufacturer’s names. Apparently politicians have no interest in protecting the jobs in domestic parts manufacturing, although those jobs are far more numerous than the actual auto manufacturing jobs. Politicians must expect us to not give these complex issues much thought.
