Like most problems, it’s complicated. Here I sit composing this on my Chinese-made ipad, a well made product. So, like every other country, the Chinese can make high quality products or junk, depending on what the buyer (often US buyers) demands. They didn’t land on the far side of the moon in a piece of junk. As you say, the internet has made it possible to search for the lowest price for just about anything, and we get what we pay for. Buying the cheapest parts isn’t what has kept our Saabs running for so long. But the average person who goes to the local auto parts store fore an IDM doesn’t realize what they are getting isn’t something that will keep their Saab running for many years. The manufacturer, importer, distributor and retailer of that junk has made their money and aren’t worried if the customer ends up walking. Whether people will buy electric cars to replace their internal combustion cars remains to be seen, and major changes like that don’t happen overnight. I recently bought some replacement power steering lines for a C900. Long unavailable from Saab or any of their usual suppliers, I ended up with hoses made in Mexico and China but had no other option. Getting them rebuilt locally was not practical in this case. They look to be well made, came with the necessary o-rings, and it seems no other company wanted to make hoses for a car over 30 years old. We’ll see how they hold up over time, but the car isn’t going to be driven for another 100,000 miles so they may be adequate. It’s complicated.
