CarTalk has a curve extrapolated showing what people spend in each year past year 1 on each car, on average. You may want to figure this into your calculations.
Other thing is, for certain production years (or even parts of years), there are certain known attention areas. Check the service repair records you will always want with any car you're looking at for attention to that known weak spot.
Think of the car as a composite of systems and fault check per component - per system. Makes it easier to think about. Quite often, if a known attention area has been taken care of with upgraded components, that area causes no more troubles. But sometimes too, new parts cause stress in a system to the older parts in that system.
Keep in mind that since the internet, it's been far easier to locate parts that were once very hard to find.
My Saab mechanic called the car's workings "elegant" the other night at a soiree. Main thing is on your acquisition - get the thing checked out by the best Saab mechanic you can find and fix all areas in need of even preventative maintenance. Don't buy it if it's suspect or the list of items to fix is too long. Some will tackle a project car if the price is right and they enjoy this sort of thing. You're not one of those people.
