Personally I have never thought SAAB maintenance needs on the whole to be unreasonable. Sure it isb't a cheap car to have wrenched and parts are more expensive than just about everything but exotics but if it is basically a good car and is well cared for it is not unreasonable to keep one on the road. Of course I have never had a Honda or a Toyota so what do I know about reasonable.
The real issue is how do you feel about the car. If you simply want transportation, especially if your resources are limited, perhaps it isn't a good choice. And even if you don't just want transportation, if you plan on putting many miles on the car each year it might not be the best purchase. However, if you have a passion for the car and accept that putting some money into when necessary just goes with the territory it might be perfect for you.
One key to help keep repair bills down is not to skip on the most fundamental of basics. Keep the oil clean, replace brake fluid and coolant on schedule, keep a very close eye on brake pads and CV boots so you don't have expensive and total unnecessary repairs that are simply the result of neglect.
