whimpish SUV payload capacities

Payload capacity is the total weight of the people and cargo that a vehicle can safely carry.
Volkswagen New Beetle = 920 pounds.
Lexus RX 300 = 840 pounds
Infiniti QX4 = 795 pounds
Weight supported by a trailer hitch — the tongue weight — reduces the payload by 10 percent of the weight of whatever is being towed. If an RX 300 is towing 3,500 pounds, the tongue weight would be 350 pounds, which should be subtracted from its 840-pound payload. That would leave only 490 pounds for passengers and cargo.
Seriously exceeding a vehicle's payload capacity poses several risks.
(1) rollover
(2) a heavier burden on the brakes
(3) adversely affects the handling and can lead to a blowout if the tires are underinflated
So where's all the 'U' in utility?
What's more, an owner needs to be a detective AND a mathematician to find out what weight his SUV can safely handle, as witness this (FREE to subscribers) article in NYT shows:
