I am not a big fan of the so called "Sport Utility Vehicle". The entire name is pretty much a false description. However I will agree that if you have a boat, or a race car or 17 kids, 4 dogs, 3 cats, and 2 goldfish and you go on holiday every weekend, they can be usefull. However I just came back from Seattle where I saw an abundance of spotless tahoes, explorers, pathfinders etc, in rush hour traffic and only one occupant. The majority of the people out there use them for commuting or for status symbols and they hardly ever go off road. Up here in VT the first vehicle to spin off the interstate in the winter are the SUV's, and the most annoying ones to get stuck behind in a snow storm are the SUV's.
I would buy an old suburban or van but with the sole intent of hauling around a race car and used only for race events. I think if the USA were to suddenly see gas prices equivalent to the rest of the world, we would see a significant decline in Stupid useless vehicle sales.
