The 9000 was a genius of an idea

I personally liked the 9000 hatch (most 9000's were hatchbacks), because it still looked like a sedan but pop the trunk and you could cram huge boxes of stuff back there.
I don't know if it would work on a 9-5, but I'd love to see the styling exercise that proposes it.
The 9-3, which is still relatively entry level, is the perfect car to feature a hatchback -- younger buyers, more likely to be active and require the extra space. But Saab buyers, even when older, like the hatch as well....GM seems to think a 9-3 wagon will solve that problem, but there are lots of people who want the space of the wagon without actually buying a wagon.
If Saab discards the hatch idea, I think they are removing one of the great pillars of their existence. Saabs have always stood for (in no particular order) practicality, safety (not just crash safety, but conservative handling), performance/fun to drive, and "something different". Taking out the hatch is like removing one of the legs on the Saab chair (practicality), and turns Saab into nothing more than another Volvo. Who wants that?
