Roads are salted because salt lowers the freezing temp. of water. This helps melt ice already on the roads. It also will help keep slush from freezing up. I lived in Philly for 20+ years and ice is the big problem on the roads moreso than snow. Salting the roads keeps 'em drivable.
Wash your car regularly and you should be good. I had an '87 Pathfinder that I ended up putting 178K miles on it before I sold it in 1998. Virtually no rust after 11 years and all those winters.
