Funny thing about Trinity is, all these freshmen come in saying they're going to transfer because it was their 'safety' -- and end up staying! (I'm class of '96...and I met my wife there, she's '94...)
Goes to show that there's alot of great small schools out there that offer more flexibility in how you learn -- independent study, more access to professors and equipment, etc. And many of these small liberal arts schools have some very non-arts programs. For example, Trinity had a pretty strong engineering program, pre-med, and neuroscience of all things.
But it does come down to what you make of it. I think you can find disenfranchised, uninvolved piles of white-cap-wearing Teds and Beckys anywhere, but forget them. Concentrate on doing what you want to do, and find a place that lets you do that.
("we have this fantastic faculty which is forever trying to get these kids to care about something" -- I totally agree -- would that be Clyde McKee's infamous browbeating? He got thru to me eventually...)
