Next to Saabs, the most cars I've owned are Cads Posted by bryan [Email] (#542) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bryan) on Thu, 20 Dec 2001 02:29:47 In Reply to: GM drops Cadillac-Saab joint plans, Clawfinger, Wed, 19 Dec 2001 10:07:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
the most number of cars I've owned next to Saabs (6th and 7th currently owned) are Caddy's (3 total, '71 Fleetwood Brougham, 70' Coupe de Ville, '71 Sedan de Ville). I dunno what it is, I always thought they were sooo much fun, kind of 'kitschy', and I always loved Caddy engines, best GM big blocks of the era. Say what you want, Caddy's are the only GM big block that didn't have some kind of weakness, i.e. BB Chev and the troubles with porcupine (canted valve) heads, breaking cranks and cams on BB Pontiacs, oiling issues on Olds and Buick big blocks....put some dual exhaust on a'71 or previous Caddy 472, flip the air cleaner lid upside down, and you had LOTS of tire smoke, even with the 2.83 gears. The '70 Coupe that I had would power brake at will. Twice I spun the rear tires so hard and fast one would literally pop. I always loved working on them because everything is so big and so roomy you don't have to squeeze yourself into anywhere, it's all right there in the open :) I'm a tall (6'5") guy, and I looooooved being able to put the bench seat all the way back, grabbing my girl and havin' her right next to me, and still able to reach the cooler in the back seat. No bucket seats, stick shifts, or seat belts in the way of a little spontaneous highway luvin' ;)
Regarding newer Cads, if you haven't driven anything powered with a Northstar, you have no ideeer what you're missing. That is one great engine!! Pavement wrinkling torque and it just keeps making power right up to redline, all the while making some of the nicest V8 sounds you'll ever hear. Definitely worth renting an STS for the weekend just for a little right foot exercise. I can't really comment on the Catera's, etc., those aren't even on the map for me. Seems to me Caddy has fallen into the EuroWannaBe trap, giving their cars letters instead of evocative names like Calais and Biarritz.
Like Saabs, you can find used Cads for cheap. I wouldn't own one now, but I've enjoyed many a mile basically parked on a couch :) There's something to be said for huge cars with huge engines with huge everything that gobble up the miles like a pitbull on a mailman. Maybe that time has past and would be considered irresponsible in this day and age, but I remember my Caddy days very fondly and feel fortunate to have experienced some serious Detroit iron from my favorite era ('64-'71) of American cars.
