There is so much wrong with your analysis, I don't know where I should start. How you can say you are comparing apples to apples and then compare apples to oranges. I don't know.

First, you said that you wouldn't get hit with high mileage charges but a purchaser would have driven 100K miles. That is an unfair comparison. If you drove the same 100K miles then you'd be hit with $4000 in high mileage costs plus wear and tear. If I drive the same 60K miles as you then my repair costs are much lower than you imagine.

Second, I have not heard of too many 60 month leases. So you'd have had to pay a cap cost reduction and a bank finance fee twice within your 60 month example.

Third, I hope that my 5 yr. old Saab is worth more than $7000, so I would be ahead of you.

Lastly, when I reduce my insurance on my five year old car because it is worth less than new, you'll still be paying whatever insurance including GAP insurance that the leasing company requires.

Car and leasing companies would have you believe that leasing is advantagous for the consumer. Just replace the word lease with renting and you see what a fallacy that is. When was the last time getting a car from Hertz was a good deal?
