question about tire tracktion/snow chains front or rear

Hi all,
Ok, I know if you use snow chains, you put them on the front for front wheel drive and rear for rear wheel drive. I have a question on this setup.
As I'm driving down a mountain this morning with good fresh snow coverage down, I was thinking to myself while watching a huge RAM 4X4s' rear end sliding out in front of me, this could happen to me too!
I'm planning a trip to yellowstone in a couple of weeks, I expect snow to be a possible problem over some of the mountain passes. I currently have new snow tires and one set of snow chains. I'm concerned of placing chains just in the front and having the rear end of the car slide out around some mountain bend.
Would placing one chain on the front right tire and one on the rear left tire seem like a good idea to keep the rear end from sliding out?
Any thoughts/theories are welcomed!
(oh, and Mr. 4X4 was kind enough to pull over and let me pass :-) )
