I spent 2 winters living in Little Cottonwood; I was never required to have 4 chains on my Saab when cahins were required. In Washington, where chains are often required in the Passes, they do not require chains on all four tires. I have never heard of chains being required on all wheels; not even 18 wheelers are required to put chains on all wheels.
Chains are sold in sets of 2, not 4. Put them both on your driving wheels - splitting a pair front/back would be dangerous, upsetting the braking, and ruining any driving traction and straight line stability (the front wheel w/no chain will spin & spin & spin).
With a front drive car, you will have both better driving as well as braking traction.
If you have the cable-type of chains, be sure that any extra cable hanging out is well-attached to the rest of the chain. If it comes free, it can whip around and scratch the fender. Carry some sharp pliers, too, just in case the worst happens & you need to cut a wrecked chain free from your axle...
btw, not reasonable to compare your car's performance to a big heavy truck w/crude 4x4 system; completely different animal w/poorer snow handling. If you have no problems getting up & down the canyons, you'll have even fewer getting through Yellowstone.
