Having worked on pilot projects in auto plants... Posted by Randy Thatcher [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: How DARE I say something negative....., Paul ![]() |
Sooner rather than later on the new 9-3 can be a disaster. Tooling up for a new model takes YEARS, literally. They take the time to design and run pilot cars, find vendors for tooling, automation, quality systems, etc. Then they have to build out for the last of a model run. Then the painful ramp up period. That's a nightmare of getting takt time to spec (production cycle time), quality issues worked out, and team members trained. You also find out what vendors cut corners on tool/die, automation, robots, data systems, etc. Rushing a car would make an already painful process a total disaster. Trust me, i've seen launches of new vehicles (new camry, matrix, corolla) and updates (many, many Toyota products, GM products) and even a minor change can be a major change to one part of plant. With the way plants are run today (Just In Time), 1 snag in 1 process could cause the entire final assembly shop to shut down. Trust me, it sucks to have a plant manager over your shoulder asking when he'll have cars flowing out the door.
They're more to the auto industry than design, ad campaigns, marketing and focus groups!
