Excellent post Randy. Do people think Saab is just sitting around twirling their thumbs waiting for 2003 so they can press the button and sell the new car? Companies like Saab and GM creat timelines at the beginning of the project, with many events such as design, testing, tool construction, tryout, debug, training, etc. all having to take place & sometimes overlapping. Not to mention last minute changes that can throw the timing into jeopardy and bring chaos to suppliers trying to meet already aggressive timing. I've been on many new car projects that were launched on time, a few that were delayed, but only 1 that was pulled ahead 3 months (and that project was a very minor makeover).
And say Saab decides magically to sell the new 9-3 next month. What about existing contracts with suppliers for current 9-3 production that was scheduled to go until 2003. Is Saab going to pay millions in penalities for getting out of these contracts early? I don't think so. The car business, as the ex-president of GM North America Ron Zarella found out, is a little more complicated than marketing toothpaste.
