EPA tests are meaningless waste of time...

Yeah sure, it's no problem at all for a manufacturer
to optimize a car in such a way that EPA milage
figures will look good, but when you compare the
comparable ie. drive a car as hard as ie. a 360 goes
with little effort, a car like the 745 will burn
similar amounts of GAS. (c'est la vie)
(please note that Ferrari engines run rich cause
this allows the engine to run cooler under heavy
working conditions, they are sport cars after all
and thus... yeah there is no useless overdrive
that would turn out great EPA figures)
The Corvette's 6th gear being a prime example of this.
In fact it's useless for a sports car and the only reason
it's that long is to get good EPA milage, but what also
helps the Vette (even more so) is the fact that it's light
for this type of car.
As such the logic of a normalized test does indeed make
sense, but under realistic driving conditions and not like
the EPA or the EU tests do it now... honestly most people
accelerate harder and brake more often then simulated
in these tests.
And this is where the problem is... do you honestly
believe that Germans will do 80Mph on the Autobahn
when there's no speed limit and sometimes little traffic...
Go see for yourself...
To get good MPG figures in cruise is easy when you
use long gearing and test at low speeds, to get good
MPG figures under brake and accelerate hard conditions
is the hard part.
Regards,
Coolknight
