When building my house, the factory built cabinetry would have cost me about $20,000, and would have been wood laminate. I didn't see any design styles that made me really want to spend that much money on it.
I got custom cabinets made by a local cabinetmaker. He also installed them. It was the solid wood I wanted, and the design and finish I wanted for $12000 ish. The interior piece like the drawer bottoms and structural pieces were high quality plywood, but that's not really visible. They will last much longer and look much nicer. I also opted for a granite countertop, which was a couple thousand and definitely worth it. The cabinetmaker took care of getting that ordered as well. He could also design the cupboards to fit with my stove, microwave and fridge nicely.
So I saved a lot of money and got something that was higher quality and more appealing.
(PS), I built my garage before I got married or had a house.
