No, you had it correct to begin with. Diesel will knock like a son of a gun in a gasoline engine. The octane rating of diesel is in the 40 to 50 range if I remember. Which I may not.:-) But I do know that diesel causes extreme pinging from personal experience. Once upon a time, I put one gallon of diesel in our -74 International Travelall to clean the carb. I put it in a completely empty tank first, then added 19 gallons of gasoline. The diesel went into the fuel lines and the engine saw pure diesel. After several minutes of horible idling, the gasoline made it through and the engine was okay. If the fork lift did not blow a piston or head gasket right away it is probably okay.
