This AM, it wouldn't turn over. I pulled the plugs, and boy were they ugly! Oily goo all over. I sprayed them with WD-40, wiped them off, and took a piece of sandpaper to the electrodes.
Still no luck.
Squirted some starter fluid into the carb, and it blasted a bunch of smoke all over, then died. Repeated the starter fluid trick about 5x before the thing would run for any length of time. It's been coughing and wheezing and stinking of diesel, but it's alive. We're having a thunderstorm right now, but I'll probably ride it around for a while when the rain lets up. The strategy at this point is to drain the tank as empty as possible before re-filling with good gas.
I think the reason it ran at all was that it never got 100% diesel- it sputtered out with a *bang* or two (real backfires) when the mostly-diesel mixture made it through the fuel system, and has been running in almost comical fashion on the mostly-gasoline mixture (rattling, pinging, coughing smoke, sputtering, bucking- like the beverly hillbilly car)
By the way- the age of the forklift has been narrowed down to late 60's-early 70's. Apparently, it's the oldest working forklift serviced by the equipment service guys who maintain it. It is Japanese-spec. and thought to have been left behind by a cargo ship at some point. Seems to have been through hell and at least partway back.
