Ground loops?

Lately, i've been getting this damn ground loop in my stereo. It won't always be there and then it will suddenly appear and i'll have the electrical whine in my stereo with some buzzing in the left rear channel. this problem is happening with an alpine 4 channel amp. I'm not sure what sets it off, but if i turn off the head unit (which turns off the amp too), and turn it back on, it will be gone.. but then will reappear later. The only thing i've changed elecrtrically is to add an APC box back in. I installed the stereo while the apc was out.
What is a ground loop, how do they happen and how do i get rid of it?
I'm thinking i'm going to try turning the amp off individually with the head unit still on the next time this happens. If the amp turns off and then back on and the problem still exists, than it's the head unit's fault i guess.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
