the relationship between the "book hours" that the dealer charges and how much of that goes to the mechanic?
Years ago I was the waiting area in a VW dealership for a 5000 mile new car check & oil change. I knew there were only 6 mechanics on duty. 6 x 8 workday hours each would mean 48 billable hours, maybe there were some assistants that could increase that number. I was listening to the customers coming in after me saying they had appointments for some heavy duty repairs, CV joints, brakes, struts. As the working crowd that dropped off their cars for the day got on the courtesy bus to the train station and things quieted down, I overheard the service supervisor gloating to some dealer exec, " the boys will be busy today, we are pushing 200 billable on these work orders alone!" So I realize the dealer may charge 2.5 hours for a given task, and the mechanic gets it done in less time than that due to experience, efficiency or whatever (like the allowed hours used to bill the customer are too generous). Does the mechanic share in the take or is he just working for a flat rate? Is there a financial incentive to the mechanic when the dealer "overschedules" the labor hours for a given staff size? If so does that affect the quality of the service work?
Thanks
