Let's say radiator replacement takes 2.5 hours according to the book. A well trained, experienced mechanic who has all the best tools can get it done in, say, 45 mintues. The customer pays for parts + the book time (2.5 hours), the mechanic gets paid for 2.5 hours, and it's profit all around for dealer and mechanic. A good mechanic can probably get 20 hours of pay for an 8 hour work day. From what I understand, most dealer mechanics are basically subcontractors. They own their own tools, too. I'd guess you need probably $10k in tools/box as a mechanic at a MINIMUM, and some guys probably have $30k+.
