IMO *BY FAR* the most valuable pieces (i.e. first things first) include:
1. 3/8" socket set 6-19,22mm reg & 6-19,22mm deep well, basic extensions, flex knuckle, breaker bar. Can buy a good, inclusive set and add as needed, incl 1/2" drive bits or whole set if have money to burn.
2. combination wrench 6mm-22mm (could omit 20,21mm). Again, buy a complete set on sale and add to it.
3. allen key set, metric, preferably one w/ ball-drive on one end and plain (square-shouldered) on the other. I like the keep-it-together type in a molded plastic collar.
4. for now at least, just get a quality 4-in-1 screw driver (and spare tips) and mulit-tip Torx bit set - will always be very useful and there is little point in getting two $40-50 complete individual driver sets right off the bat.
*Then* I'd worry about a torque wrench. And only *then* fill in the rest (I get a helluva lot of mileage out of my old Dremel, but...). It's easy to get caught up in "Oooh, that's neat, I'll need that someday" - yeah, sure, but you need the core tools first to accomplish anything, not 'convenience' tools. Finally, IMO don't waste time/money on hardware store tools (Master Mechanic, etc) thinking you can afford to get more for less; you'll regret it. Sears Craftsman (or better) tools are usually very good quality, are readily available and backed by no-questions-asked warranties, which sooner or later you'll need and appreciate having.
