You should be using ACEA A3 rated oil. This requires at least a synthetic blend, and most ACEA A3 oils are XW-40 or above, although there are some 5W30 or 10W30 oils which also meat ACEA A3(including Amsoil 5W30 heavy duty diesel oil). A3 requires that oil "stay in grade" after a shear test, which takes care of the worry about excess viscosity modifiers. There are no standards for what constitutes "synthetic blend", so while the ACEA A3 rating is comforting, fully synthetic rather than synthetic blend is also a good plan.

Mobil 1 0W40 is relatively unique in meeting both ACEA A3 and ILSAC GF (fuel saving) requirements. Amsoil is a very fine product, and Amsoil and Mobil 1 are the most widely known using Group IV (PAO, or poly alpha olefin)base oils. Most "synthetics" use Group III base oil, which is highly processed petroleum. RedLine is Group V (anything that isn't in groups I - IV; in the case of RedLine, it's polyol ester base oil, which is also used for aircraft gas turbine lubricants). It's easy to get hung up on the individual components, but in the words of a Shell engineer, it's the performance and consistency of the final result which counts, not the components.

There are some 5W-40 synthetics on the market, notably Valvoline and Shell, and Castrol sells a 5W50, 10W40, and 10W30 full synthetics.
