living in Boulder about 12 years ago. I presume it has now grown a lot. The town is on the outskirt of Boulder. When Boulder housing became very expensive, people moved out to Louisville and surrounding area.
You will not have the humidity of Atlanta for sure. It is dry to very very dry compare to Atlanta. The daily temperature swing can be very large, say 30 to 40 degrees F. It does get hot in the summer but as they say, it is dry heat but hot nevertheless. You will expect some heavy snow in the winter time and *COLD*. However, because it is high up (as in a mile high from sea level), if the sun is out, you don't feel the cold during daytime. In fact, I feel colder here living in New Jersey during winter time than when I was in CO.
I'm not sure what you meant by suburbs, to me, the whole state is a suburb and open country :-). Seriously, you won't find any sky scrappers other than in Denver. If this is your kind of living, you won't regret it.
If you can afford Boulder housing (rental or otherwise), I would highly recommend that you live closer to Boulder than out and out. If you like being in the country, then you do the opposite. As for living in the mountains, the whole area is by the foothill so you get a terrific view of the mountains regardless. You really can't get away from that view if you look to the west. If you like sking, then you *MUST* move there.
There are condos or townhouses if you are into that kind of things but I would recommend houses but at a higher price of course. The closer you get to Boulder, the more expensive an equivalent house would be. The thing is the traffic is relatively convenient so living a bit out there isn't much of a problem.
The living expenses I would believe is about the same as Atlanta, but I would follow Greg's sound advice and do some research. Also, if you have become serious, just call up a Boulder real estate broker and get some information.
As you probably have guessed, I have fond memories of the Boulder area. I may very well retire in that general area.
Good luck and let us know...yes, your Saab turbo would work just fine at that altitude :-).
