in the mountains during winter time, you don't need AWD. I was using no-season tires when I was on my long-term assignment there for a number of years including several cold winters. The state and cities are very good in clearing snow but whatever packed ice on the road tend to remain on less travelled roads.
So if you intend to live in the woods, AWD with good winter tires would be good. As for SUVs, I don't particularly recommend unless you really need the ground clearance, but that is just my personal bias. I would suggest a Subaru, very popular in the area. Given that you like Saabs, maybe a WRX wagon ?
