No, you don't need a AWD or FWD very often. There are times when it's needed, but chances are you won't be trying to go skiing during a blizard. However, since your an outdoors person, there are multiple off-road trials to good mountain biking, hiking, camping, etc that would require the ground clearance of a 4x4 (the reason I have a 4x4)..
Prior to my Viggen, I drove a twin-turbo 300zx as a primary car for six years. Never really had any problems.... Weather here is temporary. Example: 2" snow on the ground Tuesday morning, 72 degrees Weds.. Even my 36" of snow a few weeks ago was gone within a week.
