SAAB had the 9-3X or 9X as a concept vehicle, and seems to have abandoned it due to financial difficulties. It's really too bad because IF (note the big "if") I was in the market for an SUV I'd look immediately at the hybrids that Nissan and Infiniti have just started offering. Had SAAB gone full-steam ahead with that project they would have a competitive model that would still be a SAAB. BMW and Volvo's SUVs are IMO a stepping stone between the larger, traditional SUVs and the new hybrids. You can just about guarantee that both of those companies are working on more of a hybrid vehicle than their current offerings. Isn't there a BMW X3 on the way?
A Chevy Blazer wrapped with SAAB sheet metal, a nicer interior and a much higher price tag is not going to compete very well with what will soon be the most popular style of SUV - the hybrid. Fast, car-like handling, plenty of room to carry your stuff, and so much better looking than the mammoth box-on-wheels SUVs you see roaming the streets these days . . . I don't see any amount of money turning a Blazer into that kind of vehicle.
I agree with Justin's post - traditional SAAB customers don't want SUVs. Converting people to SAAB to buy an SUV is unlikely with a rebadged, fairly average SUV compared to the competition. I see this as a knee-jerk effort to increase SAAB sales, but is probably just good money after bad.
Bring back the 9-3X/9X, please!
