Dear R&T,

Paul Fre're's Letter from Europe blasts the forthcoming Saab derived Cadillac BLS. "This car can only tarnish Cadillac's good image" he writes. I can't help but wonder what new new head of Saab, Jay Spenchian, formerly of Cadillac has to say about this.

This is an unworthy slam on Saab. As he is a European, Cadillac has some magical mystique for him. As an American I see Cadillac as desperately trying to "breakthrough" it's luxo-barge image throug Mr. Spenchian's efforts. A 9-3 SportsSedan with new edge styling and a little more bling will serve Cadillac well and will be assembled with Swedish care and craftsmanship unknown to Cadillac buyers previously. His tone is that the 9-3 doesn't compete against the best from Europe, so how could a Cadillac version?

I suggest Mr. Fre're re-visit his local Saab dealer and drive the car he dissed by association with his distorted European view of Cadillac mystique. He obviously has not experienced a newer Saab 9-3.

P.S. The last time R&T compared a Cadillac to a Saab directly in 2002 the 9-5 Aero soundly trounced the CTS. Cadillac is further along now, outright winning the latest R&T comparo test, but so is Saab.
