The 9-3 chassis is not the best in its class.
BMW has some of the most obstructive, obnoxious automatic transmissions around, and their base tire selections in the US market are usually soft-ride eco-squealer crap targeted at eking out the best possible CAFE mileage numbers.
Once you get past those two hurdles - a manual transmission and some decent non-all-season tires - there simply isn't any comparison.
For that matter, as things stand in the US, the 9-3 doesn't line up chassis-wise very well against the Lexus IS300 either, IMO. The 9-3 is as good chassis-wise as the G35, but no one can match the Nissan V6. And the Japanese do better automatic calibrations than BMW. If you're looking for FWD competition, the Acura TSX (Euro Accord) is better, too.
The question, when you're talking about a Cadillac BLS, is what's its competition in Europe, because that's where they're going to sell it. Cadillac has historically fallen flat on their face outside the US. So what will convince these buyers that they should buy a Cadillac?
