You're right, fail safe turned on the fan when the temp sensor was disconnected, resulting in a -40 degree reading.
Is the dash temp indicator independent of the CTS? It seems to be, and it does seem to be creeping higher than usual, according to the owner.
I put a scan tool on it, and it was reading about 237 to 239 degrees while driving, with the fan constantly on, cycling between high and low speed.
Could be the thermostat rather than the sensor, although after letting the car sit for about an hour with about 40 degree ambient, the reading was still at 215, which seems high- thought it would come down faster than that.
Made some sensor measurements, and got the following, per the scan tool reading:
239 deg 122 ohms
226 deg 164 ohms
156 deg 480 ohms (using separate potentiometer)
78 deg 1.901 kohm (using separate potentiometer)
215 deg 362 ohms
Do you have any references that would correlate the resistance to the temperature for the sensor used in this car?
Just wanted to make sure the ECM is reading the values correctly- if it does, then it points to the thermostat, if the dash gauge is independent from the CTS circuit; since the both appear to be reading high.
Tried an IR measurement of the block at the thermostat/CTS area, and read 196 deg, for what that's worth-
Thermostat?
